Andrei Smirnoff was born in Nizhny Novgorod to the east of Moscow in 1960. He attended the Theatrical School there before being accepted as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts, St Petersburg in 1988. He graduated with an honours degree in Fine Art in 1994 and was elected a member of the Russian Union of Artists in 1997. He has exhibited widely in Russia, successfully showing his work in the Union’s own gallery since 2003. He has had solo exhibitions in Russia, France and Italy, as well as showing extensively in Germany, Monaco and Belgium.
Working from his studio in St Petersburg, he enjoys working in oil best, and his love of Klimt is evident, Egon Schiele is another of his inspirations. He portrays the mystery of women and achieves a great balance of secrecy and revelation. Capturing a slightly alien mood with their characteristically high cheekbones and slanting eyes, they are full of self-love.
As well as being an excellent artist, Andrei is also Russia’s leading remote control pilot, and he flies his planes which have a 4 to 6 foot wing span, wearing a top hat.
